News in and around Santa Barbara's Mission Canyon

Dear Mission Canyon Trails Community,

SCE has been assessing the post-storm site conditions and repair needs on our access roads throughout our service territory following the El Niño driven storms over the past months.  SCE is coordinating with the city, county, and environmental agencies in the Santa Barbara area on authorizations needed to move forward with post-storm repairs on the Tunnel Trail access road. The City and County of Santa Barbara have expressed support for SCE repairing the shared access road expeditiously to secure safe passage for the public and our crews.

This storm repair work is unrelated to the Mission Canyon Stream Restoration Project currently being reviewed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and other agencies, which SCE anticipates will begin in June.

While the storm repairs will not require the closure of the Tunnel Trail access road, SCE will have traffic monitors onsite to engage the public as necessary to ensure the safety of crews and trail users. We ask for the public’s support of this important work by:

  • Adhering to all instructions from safety personnel;
  • Paying attention to postage signage;
  • Yielding to construction vehicle traffic;
  • Complying with temporary closures as ordered.

The following scope of work has been approved by the County of Santa Barbara.

Schedule:  Mon-Fri 8 am – 4 pm, with non-noise generating hours between 7-8 am and 4-5 pm

Start Date: May 6, 2024 (Work should take approximately 3 weeks to complete)

Project Area: Lower Tunnel Trail and Mission Canyon Catway (beginning at the Inspiration Point Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road

Equipment: Water truck, water buffalo, excavator (308 and 328 with attachments), skid steer, loader, and crew trucks
